B.S. Biology (Certifiable for Secondary Teaching)
 

The B.S. Biology, Certifiable for Secondary Teaching degree program is designed for students who wish to teach biology at the secondary level; the program includes a professional education component. It is also possible for students with this major to enter a variety of other careers in research, health, and industry, as well as go on to graduate study. Course requirements for the program include:

Thirty-seven (37) credits in Biology as follows:

  • BIO 121, General Biology I

  • BIO 122, General Biology II

  • BIO 200, General Biology III

  • BIO 290, Biology Research Experience I

  • BIO 390, Biology Research Experience II

  • BIO 302 Evolutionary and Ecological Genetics, BIO 315 Microbial Ecology, BMS 306 Genetics, or BMS 316 Microbiology

  • BIO 321, Invertebrate Zoology, or BIO 322, Vertebrate Zoology, or BIO 420, Ornithology, or BIO 481, Skeletal Biology

  • BIO 405, Ecology, or BIO 311, Cell Biology

  • BIO 326, Non-Vascular Plants and Fungi, or BIO 327, Vascular Plants, or BIO 425, Aquatic Plant Biology, or BIO 444, Plant Taxonomy

  • BIO 318, Anatomy and Physiology I, or BIO 319, Anatomy and Physiology II, or BIO 331 Neurobiology, or BIO 410, Ecological Physiology, or BIO 412, Human Physiology, and BIO 413, Human Physiology Laboratory, or BIO 449, Plant Physiology, and BIO 450, Investigations in Plant Physiology

  • Biology course elective

The student must also take the following 20 credits of related Science course requirements:

  • CHEM 121, General Chemistry I

  • CHEM 122, General Chemistry II

  • CHEM 250, Basic Organic and Biochemistry

  • PHYS 121, General Physics I

  • PHYS 122, General Physics II

In addition, the student must take the following 27 credits of related Professional Education course requirements:

  • SPED 315, Introduction to Educating Learners with Exceptionalities

  • EDTE 315, Principles of Learning

  • EDF 415, Educational Foundations

  • EDSC 425, Principles of Secondary Education

  • SCI 416, Educational Technology in Secondary Science

  • SCI 417, Teaching of Science in the Secondary School

  • SCI 419, Student Teaching Seminar

  • EDSC 435, Secondary Education Student Teaching

  • RDG 440, Literacy in the Secondary School
