The Biology Department at Central Connecticut State University offers a variety of opportunities and experiences that cut across the broad field of biology. 

• Undergraduate research opportunities with faculty engaged in active research in the areas of neurobiology; medical anatomy and physiology; plant physiology; terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic ecology; physiological ecology; microbial ecology; animal behavior; invertebrate biology; marine biology; systematics; herpetology; ornithology; and computational biology.
• Undergraduate Programs in general biology; ecology, biodiversity, and evolution; secondary biology teaching; and environmental science. 
• Graduate Programs in anesthesia; health sciences; general biology; and ecology and environmental sciences.
• Pre-Health and Secondary Biology teacher preparation programs.
• Integration of teaching and research with access to state of the art equipment and  extensive research facilities including academic and research laboratories, a greenhouse, specimen collections (plant and animal), a Boston Whaler boat, an animal facility, growth chambers, and walk-in refrigerators and freezer.
• International courses in England/Ireland, Australia, Peru, and Panama.
• Internships with Connecticut State agencies, nature centers, zoos, and private industry.
• Wide variety of courses with field experiences.
• Outreach programs with local schools and science organizations.
• Seminar program that brings in many well-known speakers from off campus.
• Center for Education and Research at Outer Island (CEROI), a cooperative program between the Connecticut State University System and the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.

Operation Wallacea visited CCSU on Tuesday, 23 September, at 1:00 pm in NC 232 to discuss international opportunities to study biology in Honduras, South Africa, Egypt, Indonesia, and Peru.  View the flier here.

Biology Senior Robert Clark won the CCSU URCAD Senior Prize.  He gave his talk 4 April in the Student Center.

Department of Biology Career Fair! Nine biology employers visited for students to apply for summer jobs and permanent positions on Friday, 28 March.

Biology Senior Amy Kadison won the Benjamin Cummings Biology Prize Scholarship, an annual award only given to four biology majors nationwide.

Dwight Elementary Visit Students from Dwight Elementary School visited CCSU in May 2007 and one of the activities they got to do was a biodiversity assessment led by the Biology Department.

New Britain High School Visit Students from New Britain High School visited the Biology Department in May 2007.  They got to see college classes, visit the vertebrate museum, tour the greenhouse, and see Student-Faculty research projects in the Biology Department.  See photos here.

Eastern Colleges Science Conference The Biology Department had ten students attend the April 2007 ECSC at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.  The students did an excellent job presenting their research in poster and oral formats.

Attention Students Interested in Health Careers You can be any major at the University and be Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, or Pre-Dental.  For example, the UConn Medical School requires students to have taken courses in General Biology or Zoology, General Physics, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and English.
