BUDGET AND COSTS

This program has been allocated a budget of five million dollars (USD). The following is a break down of expected costs associated with the proposed human fascioliasis control program in Bolivia. The study will begin by collaborating with the Bolivian Health Ministry to apply to the WHO/Novartis free triclabendazole treatment program. The following budget provides for a six month period and totals $777,900. In addition, $222,100 will be set aside for unexpected additional costs in the initial six month period.

During the first six months of the mobile team program a group of local medical professionals and team members will be recruited to continue the fascioliasis control program. The remaining four million dollars will be used to treat additional communities in the area. The next communities that will be targeted will be Kallutaca, Calasaya, Coropata, Huacullani, Lacaya Baja, and Pantini. These communities have a collective rate of human fascioliasis infection of thirty-two percent. Based on the remaining four million dollars this program will be able to continue for approximately eight years at a total cost of $3,856,960. There will be $143,040 will be used for additional costs over those eight years.

Each community treated will be visited each year and their infection rates will be reassessed and a follow-up educational meeting will be held. Those who are infected will be treated and the cause for infection will be investigated. As the program proceeds, changes will be made to make the program more efficient and effective.

The initial years of this program relies on the free triclabendazole treatments from the WHO and Novartis collaboration. If the program is not continued past its initial three year agreement, the cost for triclabendazole will cost $0.40 per treatment. Without reallocating the present budget, using the additional funds in the budget we can purchase at least 350,000 treatments of triclabendazole. Therefore, if the free drug treatment agreement is not extended, this program will be able to continue educating, screening, and treating those affected by fascioliasis in the Bolivian Altiplano.
